Weather warnings issued for six Croatian regions as snow, heavy rain and strong winds forecast
The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued a series of weather warnings for Sunday, as unstable conditions are expected to affect much of the country.
Below is an overview of the warnings by region.
Osijek and Gospić Regions: Snow Warnings
A yellow warning for snow is in force in the Osijek region from early morning until the end of the day. Snow cover is expected to form, particularly in Posavina, where more than five centimetres of new snow may accumulate.
Slippery roads and pavements are likely, with possible short-term disruptions to outdoor activities. Citizens are advised to take extra care when walking, cycling and driving.
The Gospić region is also under a yellow snow warning for the entire day. In Lika, snowfall may locally exceed 10 centimetres, increasing the risk of icy roads and pavements. Short, localised interruptions to outdoor activities are possible.
Knin Region: Heavy Rain Alert
An orange warning has been issued for the Knin region due to heavy rainfall, valid throughout Sunday. Rainfall totals of 40 to 90 millimetres are forecast.
There is a heightened risk of flooding of roads and property, as well as possible local disruptions to electricity, water supply and communication networks. Driving conditions may be particularly challenging due to wet roads and reduced visibility.
Split Region: Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms
The Split region is under a yellow warning for locally heavy rain and thunderstorms, especially in the southern parts of the region.
Rainfall may exceed 50 millimetres in some areas, with a greater than 40 per cent chance of thunderstorms. Local flooding of roads and property is possible, and residents are advised to remain cautious.
Dubrovnik Region: Risk of Localised Flooding
A yellow warning is also in place for the Dubrovnik region, where more than 50 millimetres of rain could fall during the day.
There is a risk of localised flooding, minor damage to buildings, and short interruptions to outdoor activities. Driving conditions may be difficult due to wet roads and reduced visibility.
Rijeka Region: Strong Bura Winds
In the Rijeka region, a yellow wind warning will be active from 6am until the end of the day. Strong to gale-force bora winds are expected, particularly below Velebit and Velika Kapela.
Wind gusts may reach 65 km/h, with locally over 100 km/h in exposed areas. There is a risk of debris being carried by the wind, as well as disruptions to traffic and outdoor activities. Extra caution is advised in open and coastal areas.
DHMZ urges citizens to regularly monitor updated forecasts and warnings on meteo.hr, as alert levels may change during the day.
Residents are advised to adapt plans to the weather conditions and follow instructions from emergency and local authorities during this period of unstable weather.
