From vine fossils to alpine views – Radoboj will take your breath away

Located in the heart of Croatia’s Krapina-Zagorje County lies Radoboj – a small municipality with a big spirit, rich history and breathtaking nature.

Though it covers just 32 square kilometres and is home to around 3,000 residents, this picturesque corner of Zagorje is brimming with treasures – from ancient fossils and mining heritage to culture, gastronomy and unforgettable views.

Radoboj first appeared in historical records in 1334, but it truly made its mark in 1811 with the discovery of a major native sulphur deposit – one of the most significant of its kind in the world.

Soon after came coal mining, and alongside it, remarkable scientific discoveries. Fossilised plants, animals and marine life revealed that this area was once covered by the prehistoric Pannonian Sea.

Among the most extraordinary finds is a fossilised grapevine leaf, estimated to be between 12 and 14 million years old – the oldest known example of its kind in the world.

Today, Radoboj’s unique natural and cultural heritage is brought to life in the modern Interpretation Centre “Hiža vinove loze”, where visitors can explore how the landscape and life in the region have evolved over millions of years.

Another must-see is the Radboa Museum, which uses interactive and multimedia displays to tell the story of Radoboj’s mining past and archaeological discoveries. It’s a fascinating experience that captivates both children and adults alike.

At the Zagorje Nature Centre, education and experience blend seamlessly. Through workshops, field lessons and immersive virtual reality experiences, visitors can witness the growth and development of plant life from an entirely new perspective.

No visit to Radoboj would be complete without savouring the flavours of the region.

At Hiža štrukli, guests can enjoy traditional dishes such as cheese and apple štrukli, roast duck with mlinci (baked pasta sheets) and hearty homemade cheese soups – all prepared in a way that evokes the warmth of traditional Zagorje kitchens.

For those who love the outdoors, the Radoboj Mountain Lodge, named Croatia’s most beautiful and best mountain lodge in 2023, offers stunning panoramic views.

From its terrace, the rolling hills stretch like the Swiss Alps, while the sunset near St. James’ Chapel on Očura paints the landscape in golden hues – a moment of pure serenity that stays with every visitor.

As the municipality’s mayor, Anđelko Topolovec, proudly states:

“Our municipality of Radoboj is full of potential – we never stand still.”
