ZAGREB, 1 October 2025 – The ongoing shutdown of the United States federal government has also reached Croatia, with the American Embassy in Zagreb announcing temporary changes to its operations.

In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the embassy confirmed that passport and visa services, both in the United States and at American embassies and consulates abroad, will continue as planned for now.

However, the embassy’s social media accounts will not be regularly updated during the shutdown, except in the case of urgent safety or security information, daily 24sata writes.

The embassy directed the public to the official website travel.state.gov for the latest updates on services and operational status.

The disruption is a direct result of the federal government shutdown in Washington, which occurs when Congress fails to approve funding for government operations.

During such shutdowns, most government departments are forced to suspend their activities, and many employees are placed on unpaid leave until funding is restored.

Essential services, such as security and emergency functions, continue to operate.

For Croatians planning to travel to the United States, the embassy stressed that visa and passport processing will go ahead, although the situation remains subject to change depending on how long the shutdown lasts.
