Flooding hits Dalmatia – Adriatic Highway closes

(Šibenik Meteo/Tribunj)

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding across parts of Dalmatia, with the Adriatic Highway temporarily closed in some sections, Dalmacija Danas reported.

The downpour follows a change in weather which moved from the northern Adriatic and western inland areas towards Dalmatia on Wednesday.

Throughout the morning, rain, showers, and thunderstorms swept across northern and parts of central Dalmatia.

The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ), through the MeteoAlarm system, issued a red alert – the highest level – for much of the Adriatic, warning of dangerous weather conditions.

For Dalmatia, forecasts predicted over 90 litres of rain per square metre, and in several areas this figure has already been exceeded.

Record Rainfall in Šibenik Hinterland

The heaviest rainfall over the past 24 hours was recorded in the wider Zadar and Šibenik regions. The absolute record was set in Krković with 173 litres per square metre, closely followed by Čista Velika with 144.8 litres.

Other notable amounts included 134.4 litres in Putičanj and 76.2 litres in Falalelići.

On the islands, Dugi Otok (Savar) recorded 73.6 litres, Pirovac 71.1 litres, and Punta Križa on Cres 59.4 litres.

Along the coast, Vodice measured 49 litres, Veliko Rujno 48.3 litres, and Zadar’s Maraska Park 46.8 litres.

In the Šibenik hinterland and Ravni Kotari, more than 150 litres of rain per square metre fell in just one day – several times the usual monthly average.

Tribunj Submerged

Tribunj and the surrounding area have been particularly hard hit, with floodwaters and torrents overwhelming streets.

Fire services have been called out to assist with multiple interventions as storm clouds continue to regenerate over the region.

Outlook for the Coming Days

Conditions are expected to improve gradually. Thursday will remain changeable, with more sunshine than Wednesday, though light rain may still occur in places. Friday and Saturday are forecast to be mostly sunny, while Sunday is set to bring cooler and more unsettled weather again.
