Spain have overtaken Argentina at the top of the FIFA world rankings, released on Thursday morning, as Croatia also moved up.

The latest update sees Spain climb to No.1 with 1,875 points, edging out both France (1,870) and Argentina (1,870).

England follow in fourth, with Portugal, Brazil, the Netherlands and Belgium making up the top eight.

Croatia, meanwhile, continue to underline their status as one of the strongest sides in world football, moving up one spot.

After two convincing September victories – a 1:0 win away to the Faroe Islands and a 4:0 triumph over Montenegro – the Vatreni collected valuable points and now sit ninth with 1,714 points.

Crucially, Zlatko Dalić’s side remain inside the world’s top 10, a position which will be significant when it comes to being seeded for next year’s World Cup group stage draw.

Croatia are currently placed ahead of traditional heavyweights Italy (10th, 1,710 points) and Germany, who sit just outside the top ten.

Croatia’s next step on the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be their qualifier against the Czech Republic in October.
