Croatian-American filmmaker faces tragic health battle – community rallies to support

Croatian-American filmmaker John Kera is facing one of the most difficult chapters of his life, yet his story has become a powerful testament to resilience, community, and Croatian roots.

In late May, John was admitted to hospital in Bedford, Virginia, for what first appeared to be a minor foot injury.

Tragically, the infection spread rapidly, forcing doctors to amputate his right leg below the knee.

Widely known in the Croatian community for his work as an independent filmmaker and storyteller, John has since undergone weeks of rehabilitation, working tirelessly to regain his mobility and independence.

Speaking to Croatia Week, John shared an update on his recovery:

“I completed my rehabilitation at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg with over a month of physical and occupational therapy. I continue my daily exercises and workouts, which have helped me regain muscle mass. I’m also focusing on a healthier diet to build strength and balance in preparation for my prosthetic leg.”

Croatian Roots and Community Support

Throughout this journey, John says the love and encouragement he has received from family, friends, and the Croatian community worldwide have been invaluable.

“I have received such amazing support from family and friends across the globe — from Croatia, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and California, as well as from relatives in Australia and Europe. My non-Croatian friends, childhood classmates, and university peers have also been by my side. I truly have a big family in every sense of the word.”

John is currently in Nin, where he is recovering with family, and he now plans to make Croatia his permanent home.

How to Help

Due to the high cost of healthcare in the United States, John was forced to sell much of his film equipment to cover expenses. To support his recovery, his producing partner and friend, Kira Willoughby, launched a fundraising campaign.

“Kira set up a GoFundMe page to help pay medical and travel expenses, and people have been incredibly generous. The support means the world to me,” John said.

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges, John remains hopeful and determined to return to his passions.

“I look forward to getting back into my filmmaking and photography career. I want to thank all of my Croatian friends and family for their support, as well as my childhood classmates who have stood by me. This has been a dark journey, but I can finally see the light at the end.”
