Sculpture “Iron Maiden” by Croatian artist Nikola Vudrag sells for an incredible € 712,000

Croatian artist Nikola Vudrag, who is from the city of Varaždin, participated in the charity auction in Warsaw as the only foreign artist, and his ‘Iron Maiden’ mesh sculpture was sold for 712,000 euros.

Before the bidding for Vudrag’s sculpture began, the works of two late Polish artists of world and European reputation, Magdalena Abakanowicz and Igor Mitoraj, were sold for 80,000 and 100,000 euros. 

After that, no one expected that it would be possible to achieve such a large amount, so the price achieved for Vudrag’s sculpture was a phenomenal success. In recent years, no Croatian artist has sold his work for such a price, which confirms how successful this sculpture was.

“I felt like Joe Biden in the morning. I was not even aware that I had achieved the highest price. That was really a great feeling. I’m glad the organizers invited me. All collected funds go for humanitarian purposes – education and financial aid for children in Ghana, Ukraine and Poland,” said Vudrag.

He came to the auction at the invitation of the owners of the OmenaArt Foundation and the Rafal Brzoska Foundation. In addition to Vudrag, there were 15 of the biggest Polish artists, Tickets for the auction and gala dinner cost between three and five thousand euros.

Such a price was paid by 400 of the richest oligarchs, collectors, philanthropists, businessmen and well-known persons from the public and social life of Poland.

A total of 1,380,000 euros was collected at the auction, so the Croatian sculptor “earned” more than half of the amount by selling his sculpture. Vudrag is otherwise known as the author of Tudman’s bust made of bullets.
