3rd World Championship in Olive Picking starts on island of Brač

BRAČ 11 October 2019 – Croatia is aiming to defend its title as the world’s best olive pickers at the 3rd World Championship in Olive Picking which opened in Postira on the island of Brač on Thursday. 

The four-member teams, which have to be made up of two women and two men, will have their hand and rake olive-picking techniques put to the test in the competition which ends on 13 October.

This year there are 12 national teams from 3 continents participating in the 3rd World Championship in Olive Picking. The teams are from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Slovenia, England, France, Germany, Slovakia, Poland, USA, and South Africa. 

The competition is organised by the Postira Tourist Board and the agricultural cooperative with the purpose of this event to promote olive growing, exchange experience and foster friendship with countries with a long olive-growing tradition and those where olive growing is not so developed.

Last year, the Croatian team picked 67 kg of olives in 45 minutes to win the title. This was 11 kg more than the second-placed Montenegrins whose crate weighed 56.6 kg. The Slovenians finished third with 51.6 kg picked.
