27 wines of Croatia earn 90+ scores in Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Plavac Mali, Teran, Malvasia, and Pošip Recognized as Top Performers 

NEW YORK, NY, May 3, 2023:  The Croatian Wine Alliance, a group of global and US based teams promoting Croatia and its wines, is pleased to announce that the May 2023 issue of the Wine Enthusiast magazine Buying Guide features 27 wines from Croatia which earned more than 90 points (on a scale of 1-100), including one wine which scored 99 points: Saints Hills 2019 Ernest Tolj Plavac Mali (Dingač, Dalmatia; SRP: $150), made in partnership with Michel Rolland.

Within the Buying Gide, the region most represented is Dalmatia, which is home to Croatia’s first appellation — Dingač    as well as its newest and entirely-organic appellation, Komarna. The second most-noted region is Istria, in particular its indigenous red grape, Teran, as well as its white Malvasia Istriana. 

Within the Buying Guide, the top-performing varietals were:

  • Plavac Mali, from the region of Dalmatia, with 11 wines ranging from 92-99 points, including entries from Saints Hills, Korta Katarina, Volarević, and Stina Winery. 
  • Teran, from the region of Istria, with three wines including entries from Fakin and Kabola wineries; particularly notable was the 95 points awarded to Fakin Wines Il Primo Teran.
  • Malvasia, from the regions of Dalmatia and Istria, with entries from Crvik Winery, Dubrovački Podrumi, and Fakin Wines.
  • Pošip, from Dalmatia, with entries from Volarević, Korta Katarina, and Black Island wineries.

Other varieties represented include Babić, Chardonnay, Graševina, Grenache, and Zinfandel, from Antunović, BIBICh, and Testament wineries.
