Croatia Join in to Mark Earth Day

Earth DayCroatia will join more than 190 countries around the world today to mark Earth Day…

Earth Day, which is an annual event celebrated on April 22, will see events dedicated to environmental protection held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network. This year’s theme is “Green Cities”.

“Transport is one of the main causes of pollution and it accounts for as much as 25% of greenhouse gas emissions. We have just launched a project encouraging the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles as a way to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Almost a half of the world’s population today lives in cities and it is necessary to develop such lifestyles that will have the least negative impacts on the environment and the planet we live on,” said Croatian Environmental Protection Minister Mihael Zmajlović, adding that this year’s Earth Day would be dedicated to cities that were making efforts to use renewable energy sources, and promoting cleaner transportation and better air quality.

This will be Croatia’s 24th year participating in Earth Day.
