ZAGREB, 3 September 2026 – Work has begun on the reconstruction of a section of Vlaška Street in central Zagreb, marking the start of a major project to permanently transform Stara Vlaška into a more pedestrian-friendly public space.
The works cover the section between Palmotićeva and Draškovićeva streets and follow the signing of a construction contract in August.
The project will reorganise Stara Vlaška into three main areas – a promenade, square and park.
The southern section will be opened primarily to pedestrians, with a barrier-free space designed for everyday use as well as occasional public events such as festivals, markets and fairs.
The central section will become a greener area intended for rest, socialising and play, while the northern part will accommodate hospitality and retail uses.
The entire area will receive new stone paving, greenery and urban furniture, alongside improvements to the rainwater drainage system.
New public lighting will also be installed, with decorative lighting planned to highlight the monument to Croatian writer August Šenoa on the Vlaška Street plateau.
The reconstruction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the investment valued at around €3.4 million excluding VAT.
The project was designed by Atmosfera d.o.o., whose proposal won first prize in the urban and architectural competition held for the redevelopment.

Works will be carried out in phases. The second phase will also include a section of Branjugova Street, between Langov Trg and Palmotićeva.
Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said the aim was to turn Stara Vlaška, already an important pedestrian route in the city centre, into a greener and more attractive place for meeting, spending time and everyday life.
The project forms part of a wider programme to improve public and pedestrian spaces in central Zagreb.
Together with the recently renovated Schlosser Stairs and the redevelopment of Trg svibanjskih žrtava 1995, the renewed Stara Vlaška is intended to form part of a better-connected pedestrian route through Zagreb’s historic centre, with more space for pedestrians, greenery, public life and events.
