ZAGREB, 2 October 2026 – A major reconstructed road in Zagreb has opened to traffic following two years of construction, creating a new six-lane southern entrance to the Croatian capital.
The upgraded Sarajevska Road has been rebuilt along almost two kilometres and now has three lanes for traffic in each direction.
The project also includes pedestrian and cycling paths and noise barriers.
The road is expected to increase traffic capacity on one of the main southern approaches to Zagreb and improve connections between Novi Zagreb and surrounding areas.
The opening marks the completion of the current road construction phase, but further work is planned.
A new tram line is expected to begin operating on the route next month, according to Croatian public broadcaster HRT.
The longer-term plan also includes construction of an overpass connecting Sarajevska Road directly with the Zagreb bypass.

That connection is intended to give the road a greater role in linking the southern part of the city with the wider road network.
The project has been closely watched because Sarajevska Road is one of the main routes into Zagreb from the south.
The completed road provides additional space for private vehicles while also incorporating infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.
The future tram connection is expected to add another public transport option for residents in the area.

The opening also forms part of broader plans to improve transport infrastructure in the capital, where population growth and daily commuting have increased pressure on major roads.
The new road is now open to general traffic, while the tram infrastructure remains part of the next stage of the project.
The eventual connection with the Zagreb bypass is also expected to change traffic patterns around the southern entrance to the city once completed.
