Zagreb reopens historic Schlosser Steps after €1.7 million restoration

ZAGREB, 23 June 2026 – The City of Zagreb has officially reopened the historic Schlosser Steps following a major reconstruction project valued at €1.7 million.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, joined by Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet and President of the Zagreb City Assembly Matej Mišić, marked the reopening of the staircase on Monday.

The reconstruction has restored the important pedestrian connection between Ulica Cvjetka Rubetića and Trg svibanjskih žrtava 1995, allowing residents and visitors to once again use the route safely.

According to the City of Zagreb, the project focused on repairing the staircase structure and replacing all worn and outdated elements while preserving the original appearance and dimensions of the historic site.

“Schlosser Steps have been restored in the best possible way and in accordance with all conservation guidelines,” Mayor Tomašević said. “The most important goal was to restore the staircase without altering its dimensions or appearance in order to preserve its identity and value for the citizens of Zagreb.”

The works included the removal and replacement of deteriorated structural elements, including steps and landings, as well as the renovation of the pergola, lighting, benches, handrails and other features that no longer met required safety and functionality standards.

The entire project was financed through the city budget.

City officials noted that additional modifications to the main project were required after the true condition of the structure became apparent during construction. The proximity of tram infrastructure and other underground utility networks also presented challenges that required careful coordination throughout the works.

With the restoration of the Schlosser Steps now complete, the City of Zagreb plans to move forward with the second phase of the project – the redevelopment of Trg svibanjskih žrtava. Project documentation has already been prepared and administrative procedures are underway ahead of the start of works. The staircase will remain open to the public during the square’s reconstruction.

The city also announced plans to continue restoring other historic stairways across Zagreb. Previous works have already been completed on the western section of the Strossmayer Promenade, while future projects include the eastern section of the promenade, as well as the reconstruction of Zakmardi and Tomić Steps.
