Zagreb to create first major new city park in two decades

The City of Zagreb has launched preparatory activities for the development of Park Novi Zagreb, the first major new city park in the Croatian capital in almost 20 years.

The new park will transform largely undeveloped land in Novi Zagreb, located between the residential complexes of Mamutica in Travno and Super Andrija in Siget, into a modern, functional and representative green space.

70 Hectares of New Green Space

Spanning approximately 70 hectares, Park Novi Zagreb is set to become one of the largest urban parks in the city. Once completed, it will join the ranks of Zagreb’s well-known green areas such as Park Maksimir, Jarun and Bundek.

The park will be located in close proximity to several neighbourhoods in Novi Zagreb, including Travno, Siget, Sloboština, Podbrežje, Sopot, Dugave and Utrina, providing residents with much-needed recreational and green space.

Public Invited to Shape the Park’s Future

As part of the initial phase of the project, the City has launched a public survey, open until 22 March 2026, to gather the views, wishes and expectations of Zagreb’s residents. Particular emphasis is being placed on feedback from citizens living in the surrounding neighbourhoods who will be the primary users of the park.

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević emphasised the importance of public participation in shaping the project.

“With the realisation of this park, Zagreb will gain another major city park alongside Maksimir, Jarun and Bundek. We want to design it in dialogue with citizens and experts, so that their proposals will determine the programme guidelines and future decisions regarding its design and facilities. I invite all Zagreb residents, especially those in Novi Zagreb, to take part in the survey and contribute to shaping a new large city park that generations will enjoy,” said Tomašević.

Part of a Wider Urban Vision

Park Novi Zagreb forms the most significant element of a broader urban concept outlined in Zagreb’s 1971 General Urban Plan. The plan envisioned a series of six interconnected large public parks across the area.

To date, three of those parks have been completed: Park Vjekoslava Majera, Park Utrina and Park Mladenaca. The development of Park Novi Zagreb marks a significant step towards realising the original long-term vision for a green corridor in Novi Zagreb.

In May last year, following a public procurement process, the City signed a contract with Vita projekt d.o.o. for the preparation of a comprehensive study for the Park Novi Zagreb area.

The current public survey forms part of that study and represents the first phase in the park’s realisation. The findings will serve as the basis for the adoption of a formal decision on implementing the city project and for drafting the programme of a public urban and architectural design competition.

The winning solution from that competition will underpin the creation of the Urban Development Plan for Park Novi Zagreb, setting the framework for its future layout and facilities.
