Bandić (58), who has been Mayor of Croatia’s capital since 2005, was arrested, along with 19 others, on suspicion of corruption, bribery and organised crime on 19 October. All 8 defendants in the case who were still in custody were released on bail during after a hearing on Monday, except for Bandić, who will remain behind bars.

It may be a long while before the case goes to trial, with a reported 270 ‘witnesses’ still to be interviewed by the Anti-Corruption unit.
