ZAGREB, 25 March 2026 – The City of Zagreb has announced a series of major infrastructure projects that will affect traffic across the capital in the coming months.
City officials say the extensive works aim to improve safety, modernise infrastructure and ensure more reliable public transport. A dedicated website has also been launched where residents can track all planned traffic regulations and construction updates in real time.
Most of the works will take place during the summer when traffic volumes are lower due to school holidays and annual leave. However, some projects will begin earlier in April due to their complexity, while others will continue beyond the summer months.
“The goal of these works is to improve quality of life and traffic flow, increase safety for all road users and ensure more stable and efficient public transport,” said Andro Pavuna, head of the City Office for Local Government, Transport, Municipal Services, Civil Protection and Safety.
“These projects represent an investment in the long-term functionality and resilience of the city’s infrastructure and will bring safer and more comfortable daily movement around the city.”
Major Reconstruction on Vukovarska Street
One of the largest projects will be the reconstruction of Vukovarska Street, on the section between Trešnjevački Square and Savska Road.
Works will begin at the intersection of Vukovarska and Florijana Andrašeca streets, where the main water pipeline and supply system will be replaced up to Ozaljska Street and later extended towards Savska Road.
At the Savska–Vukovarska junction, water infrastructure works will be carried out alongside the installation of new tram switches and track crossings.
The final phase will include resurfacing the roadway along Vukovarska Street and constructing wider, height-separated pedestrian and cycling paths. These improvements are designed to significantly increase safety and comfort for pedestrians while giving cyclists dedicated space for safer travel.
Preparations have also been made for the future installation of dynamic traffic signalling along the corridor from Nova cesta to Florijana Andrašeca.
Bridge and Overpass Repairs
Maintenance works will also be carried out on several bridges and overpasses across the city.
The Podsused Bridge will undergo structural maintenance to ensure long-term safety and functionality. This will include repairs to key elements such as pillars, bearings, concrete and steel components, waterproofing, drainage and traffic signalling.
Overpasses at Zagrebačka Avenue–Selska Road and Ljudevita Posavskog will also be repaired after inspections identified damage that could affect the durability and functionality of the structures.
During the reconstruction of the Ljudevita Posavskog overpass, the nearby intersection with Zagrebačka Road will also be redesigned. An additional left-turn lane will be added to improve traffic flow towards the east and reduce congestion on the overpass.
Water Pipeline Reconstruction on Selska Road
Due to the age of the infrastructure and frequent pipe bursts, a major reconstruction of the main water pipeline will take place along Selska Road between Baštijanova and Zagorska streets.
The project will cover around 700 metres of pipeline. It presents a particular challenge as the existing main pipeline must remain operational throughout the works in order to continue supplying the Sokolovac water reservoir.
Parts of the system date back to construction phases in 1949, the 1960s and the 1980s, with this section experiencing the highest number of failures.
Tram Network Upgrades
Zagreb’s public transport operator will also carry out extensive tram infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving safety, reliability and ride quality.
The works include track reconstruction, replacement of concrete slabs, installation of new rails and reinforced concrete elements, as well as improvements to road crossings.
Construction on Branimirova Street will continue from late March until the end of June 2026 and includes the reconstruction of a tram stop and track replacement.
The most extensive works are planned in Zvonimirova Street, particularly at the intersection with Šubićeva Street and along the section between the Trg žrtava fašizma and Heinzelova Street. The tram infrastructure there is in poor condition and currently causes excessive tilting of trams during operation.
Real-Time Traffic Updates
Residents and drivers will be able to monitor all traffic changes through navigation apps such as Google Maps and Waze, where closures, diversions and temporary traffic regulations will be updated in real time.
The information will be maintained by city services and Zagrebačke ceste and will also be available through the City of Zagreb’s Open Data Portal.
City officials say the coordinated works represent one of the most significant infrastructure upgrade efforts in recent years, aimed at creating safer roads, more reliable public transport and a more resilient urban transport network for the Croatian capital.
