ZAGREB, 16 September 2026 – Residents of Zagreb can now use cargo bikes as part of the city’s Bajs public bicycle system, offering a new option for shopping trips, transporting children and carrying larger items around the city.
The pilot project has been launched as part of European Mobility Week, with the city introducing four cargo bike stations in the first phase.
The service is designed for journeys where a standard bicycle may not provide enough carrying capacity.
“Cargo bikes are a practical alternative for situations in which an ordinary bicycle is not enough. With this pilot project, we want to see how useful such a service will be for citizens and, depending on interest, consider expanding it further,” Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said.
Four locations
The cargo bikes can currently be collected and returned at four stations:
• Špansko – western façade of the building at Trg Ivana Kukuljevića 10
• Dugave – Hribarov prilaz, south-east of the Oktogon
• Jarun – Ulica Hrvatskog sokola, before the entrance ramp to SRC Jarun
• Trnje – near the underpass at the junction of Ulica Cvijete Zuzorić and Zlatarićev prilaz
Cargo bikes must be returned to the same station from which they were collected.
Rental costs €3 for the first two hours, with each subsequent started 30-minute period charged at €2.
Bajs reaches major milestone
The cargo bike pilot comes as Zagreb’s Bajs system continues to see high levels of use.
As of 15 September 2026, the system had recorded almost 2 million rentals and had 146,429 registered users – equivalent to almost one in five Zagreb residents.
Since its launch, Bajs users have accumulated more than 44 million minutes of riding, with around 14,000 rentals recorded each day.
Each bicycle is rented an average of six times per day.
The Bajs network currently consists of 2,000 bicycles across almost 200 stations throughout Zagreb.
Among the busiest locations are Trg kralja Tomislava, Studentski dom Stjepan Radić, Studentski dom Cvjetno naselje, Trešnjevački trg and Preradovićeva ulica.
The public bike system operates throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions. More than 320,000 rentals were recorded in June this year, the highest monthly figure so far in 2026, while the average journey lasts 22.7 minutes.
Fleet to expand by another 1,000 bikes
Bajs is also set to grow further this autumn, with another 1,000 bicycles due to be delivered at no additional cost to the City of Zagreb.
Around 15% of the new bicycles will be fitted with child seats, increasing the overall fleet by 50%.
The Bajs service was introduced following an open public procurement process. The four-year contract is worth €9.3 million plus VAT.
Under the arrangement, the private operator assumes responsibility for the bicycles, including procurement, maintenance, repairs and replacement of damaged or stolen bikes.
The contract also includes the daily redistribution of bicycles between stations to help maintain availability across the network throughout the year.
