Zagreb’s new Kranjčevićeva Stadium takes shape as roof structure rises

ZAGREB, 20 September 2026 – Zagreb’s new Kranjčevićeva Stadium is increasingly taking on the appearance of a completed football stadium, with the latest stage of construction focused on the roof structure, seating, façade work and infrastructure around the site.

The latest progress at the Trešnjevka construction site shows the stadium’s distinctive roof outline beginning to emerge, with a third corner arch of the roof structure now in place.

Work is progressing across all four sides of the stadium.

On the north and east stands, supports are being installed, followed by the fitting of seats. On the west stand, work is continuing on the façade and installations, while sections of the façade and roof are being enclosed.

The south stand is seeing work on installations, the roof structure and scoreboard, with preparations also under way for the façade.

Roads and other infrastructure surrounding the stadium are also being developed, including underground utility works and preparations for new asphalt surfaces.

The latest stage marks another visible step in the transformation of the site, with the stadium now increasingly resembling the modern arena planned for the centre of Zagreb.

More than 11,000 seats

The reconstructed Kranjčevićeva Stadium is planned to have 11,163 covered seats and a main pitch measuring 105 by 68 metres.

The stadium is being built to meet UEFA Category 4 requirements, the highest stadium classification in UEFA’s current infrastructure regulations. This will make the venue suitable for hosting high-level European club football, subject to the relevant competition requirements.

The project also includes a heated hybrid playing surface, modern facilities for players and media, accessibility features and upgraded security and multimedia systems.

Beyond the stadium itself, the wider development includes internal roads, pedestrian areas, parking and a new public square of around 6,300 square metres. The original project plans also included more than 400 parking spaces and a 1 MW solar power plant.

Completion timetable has changed

The latest construction progress comes after an amendment to the contract between the City of Zagreb and contractor STRABAG in August.

Under the revised timetable, the main construction works are scheduled to be completed by 1 December 2026, while the deadline for all contractual obligations has been extended to 1 February 2027. The amendment was signed on 28 August.

A new home for Zagreb football

Kranjčevićeva is expected to play an important role in the next stage of Zagreb’s football infrastructure development.

The stadium is planned to become a home venue for Dinamo Zagreb and Lokomotiva while the existing Maksimir Stadium is redeveloped.

Completion and commissioning of Kranjčevićeva is also linked to the wider Maksimir project, as the existing stadium needs to be vacated before its planned demolition and reconstruction can proceed.

The new Kranjčevićeva stadium is the first completely new four-sided football stadium to be built in Zagreb in more than five decades. Construction began in April 2025, with STRABAG appointed as the main contractor.
