The City of Zagreb has officially launched a design competition for the conceptual technical and architectural solution for a new bridge over the River Sava, known as the Jarunski Bridge, marking a significant step forward in one of the capital’s key infrastructure projects.

The bridge will be located along the extended Vrapčanska Street corridor and is expected to play a major role in reshaping transport links across the western part of the city.

First Western Sava Bridge in 45 Years

The Jarunski Bridge will be the first bridge built over the River Sava in the western part of Zagreb in 45 years, and only the third bridge in the city to include a tram line.

According to city officials, the project is designed not only to improve traffic flow but also to enhance long-term urban development along the Sava corridor.

Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said the bridge represents one of the most important development projects for the city in the coming years.

He stated that the new crossing will help reduce traffic congestion in western Zagreb, improve public transport connectivity, and create a new tram link between Trešnjevka and Novi Zagreb, while also strengthening connections between major city districts.

Key Infrastructure Features

The planned Jarunski Bridge will be approximately 625 metres long and 38 metres wide.

It is designed to include:

• Four traffic lanes

• A tram line

• Dedicated cycling infrastructure

• Pedestrian walkways

City authorities say the bridge will significantly ease pressure on existing infrastructure, particularly the Jadranski Bridge and key western traffic routes including Zagrebačka Avenue, Horvaćanska Road, Savska Road, and the Remetinec roundabout.

Improved Access to Major Health Facilities

Beyond transport improvements, the project is also expected to enhance access to major healthcare developments, including the planned National Children’s Hospital and the University Hospital in Blato.

Officials say this will improve emergency and general access routes once the facilities become operational.

Design Competition and Expert Jury

An evaluation panel consisting of ten experts from the fields of civil engineering, transport, architecture and urban planning has been appointed to assess submissions.

The aim of the competition is to select a solution that combines functionality, traffic efficiency and architectural value, while also contributing to the city’s visual identity.

Investment Value and Timeline

The maximum estimated value of the Jarunski Bridge project is €140 million excluding VAT. However, the evaluation panel will have the option to select a more cost-efficient solution if appropriate.

Land ownership issues for the bridge itself have already been resolved, while expropriation procedures and other legal processes are ongoing for sections of the extended Vrapčanska Street approach.

Following the selection of the winning design, the city will enter into negotiations with the author to develop a conceptual project required for obtaining a location permit.

Construction work on the Jarunski Bridge is currently expected to begin in mid-2028.
