Zagreb to build 3.5km green corridor with new tram line linking three districts

The City of Zagreb has completed the public procurement process for the conceptual design and location permit for the extension of Črnomerec Street, a major new green corridor set to transform part of the Croatian capital.

The €90,000 (including VAT) contract has been awarded to Osijek-based Rencon d.o.o., with the project documentation scheduled for completion within four months, the City of Zagreb said in a statement.

A 3.5-Kilometre Green Urban Link

The extended Črnomerec Street is envisioned as a nearly 3.5-kilometre-long green corridor, ranging from 25 to 40 metres in width. It will link three city districts – Črnomerec, Trešnjevka North and Trešnjevka South – creating a continuous urban connection across western Zagreb.

The new route will run alongside Faller Promenade and the Črnomerec stream, integrating pedestrian, cycling and tram infrastructure. It will also connect to a future pedestrian and cycling bridge planned east of Lake Jarun, spanning the River Sava.

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said the project represents an important step in strengthening sustainable mobility and improving urban connectivity across the city.

Construction in Three Phases

The project documentation will enable phased construction in three stages:

• From King Tomislav Street to Ozaljska Street

• From Ozaljska Street to Horvaćanska Road

• From Horvaćanska Road to the future bridge over the Sava

A new tram line is planned for the section between Ozaljska Street and Horvaćanska Road, significantly enhancing public transport links in the area.

Focus on Sustainable and Active Mobility

Special emphasis will be placed on pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. Plans include newly designed pathways, intersection ramps and rest areas equipped with benches, electric bicycle charging stations and small service points.

Recreational and outdoor exercise areas will be arranged along the stream corridor, further enhancing the green character of the project.

The conceptual design will also cover stormwater drainage, public lighting, communal infrastructure, landscaping and improvements to the stream bed. In addition, the reconstruction or potential relocation of the bus terminal on Faller Promenade will be examined as part of the overall plan.

Multiple Design Options Under Review

As part of the contracted services, three variant conceptual designs will be prepared. Following analysis, the City of Zagreb will select the preferred option for further development.

The project forms part of Zagreb’s broader strategy to promote sustainable transport, improve urban green spaces and strengthen connections between key residential districts.
