Zagreb offers free trams, buses and bikes on car-free day

Public transport and shared bicycles will be free across Zagreb on Tuesday, 22 September, as the Croatian capital marks European Mobility Week and Car-Free Day.

The City of Zagreb and Zagreb Electric Tram ZET) will allow residents and visitors to use trams and buses free of charge throughout the city for the day, the City of Zagreb announced today.

Registered and active users of the city’s Bajs public bicycle system will also be able to use the bikes free of charge. Free rides will apply to regular daily journeys started and completed between midnight and 23:59. Bikes cannot be kept for the entire day.

The Car-Free Day will also bring major traffic restrictions to central Zagreb. From 08:00 to 20:00, motor vehicle traffic will be closed in the central area bounded by Mesnička, Ilica, Gundulićeva, Hebrangova, Ulica Republike Austrije, Palmotićeva, Ribnjak, Zvonarnička and Ulica T. Mikleušića.

The closure will also include part of Martićeva Street west of Smičiklasova, as well as Mesnička Street north of Streljačka, including access from Ilirski trg.

During European Mobility Week, the small electric vehicles known as Fulir will also operate in the pedestrian zone in the city centre. The service is free and is intended to make movement around the central area easier while traffic restrictions are in place.

European Mobility Week is being used by Zagreb to promote alternatives to private car use, including public transport, cycling and walking. The city says the broader aim is to reduce reliance on cars, improve public space and quality of life, and develop a transport system aligned with sustainable urban development.

Free activities connected with European Mobility Week continue through Tuesday, with the full programme available on the City of Zagreb’s dedicated event website here.

People who are not yet Bajs users can register and activate an account through the city’s public bicycle system before using the service.

The initiative forms part of the wider European Mobility Week campaign, which promotes more sustainable ways of moving around cities.
