After more than half a century of waiting, the city of Zadar has officially begun construction of a long-awaited Olympic swimming pool, marking a significant milestone for local sport.
The project, funded through European Union funds, will see the Višnjik sports centre further develop into a modern, multifunctional sports district catering to both professional athletes and recreational users.
The new facility will include a state-of-the-art 50-metre Olympic pool along with accompanying amenities, representing the largest investment in sport in Zadar this year.
Construction works commenced this week and are expected to be completed within 10 months.
Zadar Mayor Šime Erlić confirmed that the value of the works stands at €2.7 million plus VAT. He also announced plans for a second phase of development, which will include the construction of spectator stands and multi-purpose facilities intended for use by local sports clubs.
The addition of the Olympic pool is expected to significantly strengthen Zadar’s position as a city of sport, particularly in aquatic disciplines. Local athletes and coaches believe the timing of the project is ideal.

Marin Jovančević, captain of VK Zadar 1952, highlighted the importance of the development, telling HRT that improved conditions will open up new opportunities for training and competition.
Experts also point out that the new facility could enable Zadar to host major international events. While senior-level competitions may take time, there is strong potential for hosting European and world junior championships.
Local swimming clubs are set to benefit considerably. PK Jadera, which currently has around 200 swimmers across all age groups, will gain access to significantly improved training conditions.
Head coach Marijan Čulina expressed optimism that the new infrastructure will allow athletes to compete at a higher level, not only within Croatia but across Europe.

Beyond sport, the Olympic pool is also seen as a valuable addition to Zadar’s tourism offering.
Discussions are already underway regarding the possibility of covering the pool in the future, although any such decision will depend on expert evaluation.
