Who will replace Zlatko Dalić? The favourites to be next Croatia coach

With Zlatko Dalić confirming today that he has stepped down as Croatia head coach, attention is already turning to who could take charge of the national team for the next chapter.
Dalić informed the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) of his decision following a remarkable spell in charge that began in 2017.
His successor is yet to be announced, with Croatia’s next scheduled gathering coming in September for the UEFA Nations League.
Several names have already emerged as possible candidates.
The strongest contender is widely considered to be Slaven Bilić. Currently without a managerial role, Bilić previously coached Croatia between 2006 and 2012, earning widespread praise for guiding the team to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2008.
Bilić is also favourite in polls among fans to take over from Dalić.
Another possibility is Ivica Olić, who has been part of Dalić’s coaching staff throughout Croatia’s last three World Cup campaigns. The former Croatia striker is now in charge of the Croatia Under-21 team.
Some names also being mentioned include Sergej Jakirović, who is currently in charge of Hull City. The former Dinamo Zagreb coach has enjoyed a rapid rise after getting Hull City promoted to the Premier League last season.
Edin Terzić is another favourite among fans. The German-born coach, who has Bosnian roots and also holds Croatian citizenship, built his reputation with Borussia Dortmund, leading the German club to the UEFA Champions League final before taking on a new challenge in Spain.
Former Croatia defender Vedran Ćorluka is also believed to be under consideration. Having served as one of Dalić’s assistant coaches during recent major tournaments, he has gained valuable experience within the national team environment and is highly regarded by the Croatian Football Federation.
Igor Tudor is another experienced candidate. Having managed clubs including Lazio, Marseille, Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur.
Ivan Jurić is also another with experience. He built much of his managerial career in Italy, earning a reputation for his tactical approach and work with several Serie A clubs.
Former Croatia coaches Niko Kovač and Igor Štimac have also been mentioned.
Nenad Bjelica remains another outsider along with Krunoslav Jurčić. Since taking charge of Egypt’s Pyramids FC in 2024, he has guided the club to its first domestic league title and its first CAF Champions League triumph, achievements that have further strengthened his coaching credentials.
During almost nine years at the helm, Dalić oversaw the most successful period in the history of the Croatia national team, leading the Vatreni to silver at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, bronze at the 2022 World Cup and a runners-up finish in the 2023 UEFA Nations League.
