The 16-year-old swimmer, who won the final in a time of 7:45.92 minutes, added another Croatian record to his resume. Grgic overtook the previous national record of 7:51.78 held by Marin Mogic.

Grgic, who lives in Split, “raced his way to gold in the men’s 800m freestyle in Budapest tonight, taking the World Junior Championships title in a new lifetime best of 7:45.92,” according to the information on the website of the championships.

Ilia Sibirtsev of Russia and Thomas Neill of Australia grabbed the silver and bronze, in this race.

Grgic’s time also met the qualifying standards for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
