Vukovar’s biggest summer river festival returns along the Danube

The city of Vukovar will mark the International Danube Day with its annual Dunav Fest, taking place from 25 to 27 June along the city’s Danube promenade. The festival transforms the riverside into a vibrant hub of cultural, gastronomic and entertainment events for all generations.

Celebrations connected to the Danube in Vukovar traditionally last several days, reflecting the city’s strong connection to the river. The festival officially aligns with International Danube Day, observed globally on 29 June.

Throughout the three-day programme, visitors can expect a wide range of activities including gastronomic presentations, cultural performances, sports events, family workshops, concerts, wine tastings and traditional craft exhibitions.

The event is designed to highlight the Danube as a key natural, cultural and gastronomic identity of the city, while promoting local tourism and heritage.

A key attraction is the Danube Fair of traditional products, alongside exhibitions such as “Panonski gusar”, promotional river cruises, STEM competitions and children’s programmes.

The highlight of the festival will take place on Saturday, 27 June, with the traditional Fišijada, a competitive fish stew cooking contest that will bring together numerous teams from across Croatia.

Experienced chefs will be joined on the judging panel by well-known influencer Ribafish, with the best fish stew masters set to receive awards and prizes.

The festival atmosphere begins earlier in the month with the Week of Danube Cuisine, running from 20 to 29 June. During this period, several restaurants in Vukovar will offer river fish dishes at promotional prices, further promoting the region’s culinary traditions.

Students have also contributed to the gastronomic programme through collaboration with the Srednja strukovna škola Marko Babić, creating a modern Vukovar cookbook titled “Taste and Stay”, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of the Danube region.

Evening programmes will feature major concerts. On Friday at 21:00, the stage will host the band Zabranjeno pušenje, while on Saturday at the same time, Croatian singer Miroslav Škoro will perform.

The festival is organised by the Turistička zajednica Grada Vukovara and the City of Vukovar, with support from the Hrvatska turistička zajednica and other partners.

Mayor Marijan Pavliček said the festival once again confirms Vukovar as a city living with and alongside the Danube.

“Dunav Fest once again confirms that Vukovar is a city that lives by the Danube and with the Danube. Through a carefully designed programme, we aim to highlight our rich gastronomic tradition and offer visitors an authentic experience that connects local flavours, people and culture,” he said.

The festival also reflects a long-standing local saying: “What do we need the sea for when we have the Danube?” Dunav Fest provides an opportunity for visitors to experience this sentiment first-hand, combining heritage, cuisine and cultural identity along one of Europe’s most important rivers.
