Vinkovačke Jeseni 2026: Vinkovci to celebrate 10 days of Croatian tradition and culture

VINKOVCI, 26 August 2026 – The eastern Croatian city of Vinkovci will once again become a centre of Croatian folklore, culture and tradition when the 61st Vinkovačke Jeseni takes place from 11 to 20 September.
Held over 10 days, the major Slavonian festival will bring together folklore groups, musicians, performers and visitors from Croatia and abroad, with this year’s theme, “The Train of the Slavonian Plain” (Vlak slavonske ravnice), reflecting stories of migration, arrivals and new beginnings.
The theme also recalls the movement of people to Slavonia during the 20th century, including those who came from different parts of Croatia and Herzegovina in search of a better and more secure life.

The official opening on 18 September will focus on fra Didak Buntić, the Herzegovinian Franciscan known for his humanitarian efforts during the First World War, when he helped organise the arrival of large numbers of children from Herzegovina to Slavonia. He will be portrayed by Mostar actor Robert Pehar.

Folklore remains at the heart of the festival. Around 70 cultural and artistic societies from Vukovar-Srijem County will perform during the opening folklore programme, while the 23rd Croatian Children’s Folklore Festival will feature young performers and child riders on 13 September.

The second weekend will feature the State Showcase of Original Croatian Folklore, followed by the traditional closing procession, including decorated horse-drawn carriages and horsemen.
Music will also feature prominently, with performances by Jelena Rozga, Tony Cetinski, Mate Bulić, Vojko V and Peki, Slavonske lole and others. A special event on 15 September will bring together 100 tambura players for the first Vinkovci edition of Slavonska Rapsodija.

The festival will once again combine performances with traditional food, costumes, music, horses and opportunities for visitors to experience the cultural heritage of Slavonia.
