Exceptionally talented 18-year-old footballer Fabian Benko has pledged his allegiance to Croatia…

The Munich-born midfielder will join up with the Croatian U-21 squad ahead of their important Euro qualifier against Sweden after deciding to represent Croatia and not the country of his birth Germany for whom he represented at U-17 level.

Born to Croatian parents, Benko joined Bayern Munich in 2005 when he was just seven years old and this summer made his senior debut for the club coming on for Arturo Vidal in Bayern’s 5–0 win over Carl Zeiss Jena in the German Cup.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) say that negotiations to get Benko to committ to Croatia for the future have been ongoing for a while now.

“Conversations intensified during preparations for the U-17 World Cup in Chile and again ahead of the U-19 European Championships in Germany. Today’s phone call between the player’s father and HNS technical director Romeo Jozak saw the 18-year-old and his family decide to select the red and white checks ahead of Germany,” HNS confirmed.

HNS say that Benko is a great coup for Croatian football and a huge talent for the future.
