Legendary mixed martial artist Stipe Miočić has been officially granted Croatian citizenship.
The former UFC heavyweight champion was presented with his domovnica — the official confirmation of citizenship — by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković at a special reception held at Banski dvori in Zagreb on Tuesday afternoon.
In a gesture of appreciation, Miočić gifted the Prime Minister a pair of signed MMA gloves, symbolising his strong ties to his Croatian heritage.
“Thank you for the kind words. I’m here with my family and we’ve had a lovely conversation. It’s a great experience. I always say — Croatia is the most beautiful country with the best athletes in the world. We’re excited to spend a few days here. We’re proud to be part of such a great country, so thank you again,” said Miočić after receiving his domovnica.
Miočić’s trip to Croatia will also see him appear at the Sunset Sports Festival in Zadar, taking place from 5 to 7 June.
Festival director and former NBA player Damjan Rudež praised the fighter’s presence, saying:
PVRH @AndrejPlenkovic: Drago mi je u Banskim dvorima pozdraviti našeg proslavljenog sportaša, američkog Hrvata Stipu Miocica i njegovu obitelj! @stipemiocic jedan je od najuspješnijih teškaša u UFC-u, čiju smo cijelu karijeru u Hrvatskoj svi vjerno pratili. 🤼🇭🇷 pic.twitter.com/DNUwioR5nK

“It is a great honour to announce the arrival of Stipe Miočić, one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time and a sportsman whose achievements, character and values have left a lasting mark on the world of combat sports. His story symbolises perseverance, dedication and pride. I believe his participation will inspire all of our visitors.”
A Career to Remember
Miočić was born in Ohio, USA, to Croatian parents. His late father came from Rtina, close to Zadar, and his mother hails from Cetingrad, near Karlovac.
He also proudly displays two Croatian tattoos as a symbol of his heritage.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters in UFC history, Miočić held the UFC Heavyweight Championship twice and successfully defended it a record four times, including three consecutive defences — a feat unmatched in the division.
His final bout took place in November 2023, where he faced Jon Jones and suffered a loss via technical knockout. Following the fight, Miočić confirmed it was his last, closing the chapter on a remarkable MMA career.
