Žnjan, a coastal neighbourhood in the Croatian city of Split, is undergoing an extensive transformation in what is the city’s largest urban redevelopment in over half a century.
The €45 million project, funded primarily by the European Investment Bank, is poised to turn Žnjan into a state-of-the-art recreational hub.
The redevelopment carefully balances modernisation with preservation with the coastline of Žnjan Beach remaining largely untouched.
However, significant enhancements are underway just behind the shore. Plans include the creation of sports courts, cycling paths, promenades, and children’s playgrounds.
A large amphitheatre is also being built, alongside a new garage and parking facilities for up to 1,000 vehicles. There will also be 11 designated hospitality venues, and the addition of 40,000 square metres of green spaces.
December update
Key features of the project are advancing rapidly. The dome of the amphitheatre is being installed, and work on its seating area is in progress.
Over 75% of the promenade construction is complete, with paths being built from both directions. Above the garage, groundwork for sports fields is underway, while additional steps and seating are taking shape. Inside the garage, electrical and other interior finishing works are being finalised.
The redevelopment also prioritises environmental improvements. The grounds are being cleared, levelled, and prepared for extensive landscaping.
Green spaces near the beach, referred to as “green islands,” are being filled with soil in anticipation of planting.
“These efforts are part of a broader commitment to ensure that Žnjan remains one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches,” Grad Split said.
