NEW YORK, 30 August 2019 – Croatian tennis player Petra Martic has moved into the last 16 of the US Open in New York on Friday with a victory over 12th seed Anastasija Sevastova.

The 22nd seed Croatian was impressive in her victory, dispatching the Latvian in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 26 minutes. The 28-year-old has reached last 16 at all four Grand Slams.

The match did not start the best for Martic, with Sevastova breaking and racing out to a 2-0 lead. Martic got back into the set with a break herself before breaking again at 4-4 to then serve and take the opening set.

Martic was finding her groove in the second set and broke her opponent early to lead 2-0. She had the chance to break again at 4-2 but would finally do it when the score was 5-3 to take the set and match.

Serena Williams next

In the round of 16, Martic will face 6-time US Open champion Serena Williams. The American won her third round match against Karolina Muchova, 6-3, 6-2.

Martic has had wins already over Ana Bogdan and Tamara Zidansek so far at the US Open, dropping only one set so far. Her previous best result at the US Open was reaching the second round.
