Although Marin Čilić’s US Open dream ended on Wednesday at the hands of Kei Nishikori, Croatia will still have a representative in a final at the tournament.

Nikola Mektić (29) and his Polish partner Alicia Rosolska (32) have reached the final of the mixed doubles at the US Open.

Mektić and Rosolska, who are playing together in their first Grand Slam, will meet American-UK pair of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jamie Murray in the final on Friday.

Mektić and Rosolska qualified for the final with a victory over John Peers and Zhang Shuai 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.

The doubles specialist has the opportunity tomorrow to become the third Croatian in history to win a Grand Slam mixed doubles titles and the third this year after Mate Pavić won the Australian Open with Laura Siegmund and Ivan Dodig won the French Open with Latish Chan earlier this year.

Mektić reached the semifinals of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon last year and this year at the French Open. He also won the 2018 Mutua Madrid Open and in June 2018 achieved his highest career ranking at No.18.
