Raclette – which topped the list

Cheese is one of the world’s most beloved and versatile ingredients, found in everything from classic comfort foods to haute cuisine.

From the tangy sharpness of cheddar to the creamy richness of brie, cheese adds depth and flavour to dishes across the culinary spectrum.

Taste Atlas has taken a mouthwatering journey around the world to explore the 50 best dishes with cheese. From cheesy street snacks to decadent desserts, these dishes showcase the diverse ways in which cheese can be used to create culinary magic.

The list features two dishes popular in Croatia and are listed under the Croatian flag.

At no. 9 is burek with cheese

It’s a common belief in Bosnia and Herzegovina that burek must have a meat filling to be called burek. However, this isn’t a universally accepted rule since burek’s origin can be traced back to Turkey. While Bosnians roll burek, sirnica (cheese), and krumpiruša (potato) pies into a coil, Croatians are more flexible and shape their burek into a round or coiled form – both styles are acceptable and can be referred to as burek sa sirom when filled with cheese, Taste Atlas said.

The term burek sa sirom, denoting a round or coil-shaped pie filled with cheese has been so engrained into Croatian culture (for more than 50 years) that it can be considered a Croatian classic regardless of its name, they added.

Making the list at no. 40 was sir i vrhnje.

Created by mixing fresh cottage cheese with sour cream, sir i vrhnje, translating as cheese and cream, is an iconic dish in Northwestern Croatian cuisine and is typically consumed as a breakfast. Some prefer to enhance its flavor by adding smoked paprika powder, salt, pepper, or minced garlic, Taste Atlas writes.

Although available pre-made in many supermarkets, it is recommended to head to farmers’ markets for the best versions.

The Swiss specialty Raclette was named the number one cheese dish in the world, followed by the popular Greek appetizer Saganaki and the Shahi paneer cheese curry from India.
