Traditional 48th Donkey Race Held in Tribunj

On Saturday night the annual 48th Donkey Race was held in the small village of Tribunj near Šibenik on the Dalmatian coast in front of a traditionally large crowd.

This year’s winner was Štef the donkey, ridden by Roko Popov. Popov and Štef beat 13 other competitors in what is one of Croatia’s oldest races.

“I am very happy, I have fulfilled my childhood dream. I would like to thank my trainer and the owner of the donkey who trained is so well over the last three months. I named the donkey Štef after one of my father’s friends in Zagorje,” said 16-year-old Roko after winning the race.

The donkey race is organised by Croatian Donkey, an association formed to protect donkeys and Logorun Island (commonly known as Donkey Island). Logorun Island is believed to have become the first protected resort for donkeys in the world.
