They can be found at most Croatian summer destinations along the coast – rows of market stands full of imitation clothing and accessories such as replica football shirts, Louis Vuitton bags, Hugo Boss belts and Prada sunglasses.
Tourists however, in the Dalmatian city of Split strolling around looking to pick up a deal on Saturday morning got a surprise when the Split Market’s had some visitors. Uniformed and armed Customs officials raided the famous markets at one of its busiest times of the week – just before lunch time on Saturday. The officials, who were reportedly on the lookout for goods without a ‘paper trail’, ceased rubbish sacks full of goods in the 2 hour raid. Tourists, locals and particularly stall holders were shocked after Saturday’s raid. The crackdown on Croatia’s once famous ‘grey economy’ has undoubtedly been stepped up since the nation joined the EU just 2 months ago. Photos of the raid can be seen here.
