Tourist reunites with Hvar family 23 years after accident thanks to social media appeal

A story shared on social media this week has touched people across Croatia after a tourist successfully tracked down a family from the island of Hvar who helped him following a serious accident more than two decades ago, Večernji list reported.

The man recalled an incident from 2003 when he was holidaying on Hvar in a post on the Facebook group OTOK HVAR. While riding a scooter across the island, he suffered a broken leg in an accident and was left stranded by the roadside.

According to his account, a local taxi driver came to his aid. She brought him water and an umbrella and arranged transport to a nearby medical clinic. Her support did not end there.

The woman reportedly stayed with him for several hours, bringing him food and water to ensure he was comfortable while receiving treatment. Despite not speaking English, the pair were able to communicate through acts of kindness and care.

After the injured tourist was transferred to hospital in Split, the woman sent her son to deliver his luggage. The young man then remained by his side, helping him withdraw money from a cash machine and assisting him with preparations for his journey home.

The tourist said he offered money in return for the help but the young man refused.

Instead, he recalled being told to find meaning in the experience and to return one day to stay with him and his mother when he next visited Croatia.

Over the years, the tourist lost contact with the family. However, with plans to return to Croatia, he recently decided to try to find them again.

He posted two photographs of the young man taken in 2003 and asked social media users for help identifying him and his family.

The search proved remarkably short-lived.

Among the responses was the very woman who had helped him all those years ago, Eva Blažević.

In a comment that attracted widespread attention, she expressed her happiness at reconnecting with the tourist and reflected on the events of that day, saying she felt they had simply been in the right place at the right time.

She added that hearing from him again meant more to her than money and said she looked forward to seeing him when he returns to Croatia.

The story quickly generated thousands of reactions online, with many users praising the actions of Eva and her son and describing the reunion as a reminder of the power of kindness and human connection.

Others said the story highlighted the generosity and hospitality for which Croatia is often known, particularly in local communities where helping strangers remains a deeply valued tradition.

More than 20 years after a chance encounter on a road in Hvar, a simple social media appeal has reunited people connected by an act of compassion that neither side forgot.
