Strossmayer’s Croatian Picnic Grounds in Vienna, Ohio has long served as a cultural hub for the Croatian community in the Youngstown area.

With a history stretching back over a century, the venue continues to bring together generations of Croatians to celebrate their heritage through food, music and community.

Founded in 1911, and officially receiving its state charter in 1923, Strossmayer’s Picnic Grounds quickly became a cherished gathering place for Croatian immigrants and their families.

It reached the height of its popularity during the 1980s, when summer picnics were held almost every weekend, drawing hundreds of visitors for traditional food and tamburica music.

In 2000, Zvonko Juratovic took over as president of the organisation, ushering in a new era of growth and modernisation.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the picnic grounds found a way to keep the tradition alive by operating a curbside lamb roast – a beloved culinary tradition that helped maintain community ties during difficult times.

Post-pandemic, Strossmayer’s has seen a resurgence in both attendance and volunteer involvement.

The launch of the Croatian Festival in 2023 further revitalised interest, attracting Croatians from neighbouring states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan.

The festival has since become the opening event of the summer season, featuring live performances, traditional dishes like roasted lamb, and cultural displays.

Over the decades, the society has grown into a cultural cornerstone, with Tudja’s passion for music and mentorship laying a strong foundation.

Despite early challenges, the choir thrived, producing notable talents like Paul Misak, who became a renowned basso profundo, and achieving widespread acclaim across the region.
