Croatia has beautiful nature, beautiful people and beautiful towns and villages. Some place names around the country though will make you chuckle.
Even though it is unusual today, back in the day some of these names probably sounded different. They were connected to animals, geographic structure, and sometimes even to body parts.
There was even a popular commercial made for the Croatian beer brand Ožujsko celebrating the quirkiness of some of the place names in the country.
Here are just some of them to see what exactly what we mean.
Babina Greda – Translation: ‘Grandma’s Balk’ – A village in Vukovar – Srijem County.
Babina Guzica – Translation – Grandma’s Ass – It is an island which is part of Kornati National Park.
Donja Batina – Translation: Donja means ‘lower’ whilst Batina is a stick or baton or a word to describe a bludgeoning or beating – It is in Krapina – Zagorje County, near Zlatar.
Gaćelezi – Translation: It is a combination of 2 words – ‘panties’ and ‘lie down’ – It is located in Šibenik – Knin County.
Gačice – Translation: ‘Panties’ – Which is in Varaždin county.
Gornje and Donje Cjepidlake – Translation: Gornje and Donje mean ‘Upper’ and ‘Lower’ whilst Cjepidlake means ‘splitting hairs’ or slang for someone super pedantic – They are places in the Bjelovar – Bilogora County.
Grdoselo – Translation: ‘ugly village’ – Located near Pazin in Istria.
Grudnjak – Translation: ‘Bra’ – It is located in the Virovitica – Podravina County.
Ludbreg – Translation: ‘Crazyhill’ – It is a city in Varaždin county known as the centre of the world. The folk of Ludbreg claim that if you were to spread a map of the world flat, then it is their town which is bang smack in the middle.
Pivnica Slavonska – Translation: ‘Slavonian Alehouse’ – The place called a beer hall is located near Cjepidlake.
Prduša vela – Translation: Basically means ‘big fart’ – It is one of the islands near the Kornati National park.
Špičkovina – Translation: Let’s just say it contains a derogatory word for female genitalia plus a few extra letters – It is located in Krapina in the Zagorje County.
Štakorovec – Translation: ‘Rats’ – It is located in Zagreb County.
Svinjarevci – Translation: Basically means ‘Pigs’ – Another village in Vukovar – Srijem County.
Veliko Svinjičko – Translation: Roughly meaning ‘big piggy’ – It is a place in the Sisak – Moslavina County.
Ženodraga – Translation: ‘Dear wife’ – Which is found near Višnjan also in Istria.
