The Independent To Pay Croatian Actor Damages After Wrongly Using His Photo

A UK court has ruled that British newspaper The Independent must pay damages to Croatian actor Ljubomir Jurkovic, after it published an article about the death of elderly Nazi war criminal Samuel Kunz, and used Jurkovic’s picture to illustrate the story.

Jurkovic has accepted an apology and “substantial” damages, after the High Court in London ruled in his favour. In November 2010 The Independent featured on its front page a report about the death of 89-year-old Kunz, a former Nazi concentration camp guard who was responsible for the death of over 430,000 Jews. With the article they used the picture of 52-year-old Croatian actor Jurkovic in the uniform of a Croatian fascist soldier for a part he played in the 2007 critically acclaimed film The Living and the Dead.
