Split strengthens Riva safety measures ahead of peak tourist season

SPLIT, 13 June 2026 – As the tourist season gets underway and visitor numbers increase across the city, the City of Split is continuing to implement measures aimed at enhancing safety on the Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda, better known as the Riva.

The Riva is one of Split’s most important and heavily visited public spaces, attracting residents and tourists throughout the year.

During the summer months in particular, the waterfront promenade serves as a focal point for gatherings and hosts a wide range of cultural, entertainment, sporting and other public events.

Given the large number of people using the area, city authorities have placed a strong emphasis on measures designed to ensure the safe use of the space.

Among these measures is a system of security bollards installed at the entrance to the Riva. Their primary purpose is to prevent unauthorised motor vehicles from entering the pedestrian zone and to help protect residents and visitors during daily activities as well as organised public events.

The system has also been adapted to meet the needs of emergency services. It allows controlled access for police, ambulance, fire and other emergency response units when urgent intervention is required.

Authorised services have mechanisms in place to operate the system and ensure timely access whenever necessary.

The use of physical protective barriers in public spaces has become a common preventive security measure in many European cities. Such solutions play an important role in safeguarding areas where large numbers of people gather and contribute to overall public safety, says the City of Split.

The City of Split added that it continues to work closely with the Split-Dalmatia Police Administration and other relevant authorities to maintain a high level of safety in public areas and to ensure that all necessary measures are taken in the interests of residents and visitors alike.
