SPLIT, 30 July 2026 – The Split City Council approved a temporary ban yesterday on the sale of alcoholic drinks in shops and other retail outlets during overnight hours, as part of efforts to improve public order and reduce disturbances during the busy summer season.

Under the new decision, alcohol cannot be sold between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. across the city. The measure will remain in force until 15 September.

City officials say the restriction has been introduced to help protect public health, preserve public order and improve the quality of life for residents. It is also intended to reduce the impact of excessive late night drinking, particularly in Split’s historic centre, where large numbers of visitors gather during the summer months.

The council said the measure aims to address problems linked to overnight alcohol consumption, including excessive noise, anti social behaviour and littering in public spaces. The decision is also designed to help safeguard the city’s cultural heritage and limit environmental impacts.

The restrictions apply to shops and other retail businesses selling alcoholic beverages during the specified hours.

Compliance with the new rules will be monitored by the State Inspectorate together with other competent authorities acting within their legal powers.

Businesses or individuals found to be breaching the regulations could face significant penalties under Croatia’s Trade Act.

Companies may be fined between €5,000 and €39,810, while responsible persons within those companies could receive fines ranging from €2,000 to €6,630.

Sole traders face potential fines of €5,000 to €13,270, while individuals could be fined between €2,000 and €6,630 for failing to comply.

The temporary restrictions will remain in place throughout the peak tourist season before expiring in the middle of September.
