The psychological horror Speak No Evil, directed by James Watkins and starring James McAvoy, has quickly gained attention after arriving on Netflix, reaching the number one spot in Croatia within days of its release.
The film, which first premiered in cinemas earlier this year, was partially shot in Croatia in spring 2023 as part of the Filming in Croatia programme.
The opening sequences of the film were shot in the picturesque region of Istria, with filming taking place in Motovun, Grožnjan and the surrounding area of Kaldir.
Particular emphasis was placed on scenic locations such as Stanzia Vinella, capturing the region’s distinctive hilltop landscapes.
Filming in Istria took place over four days in May 2023, involving a total of 144 crew members. Of these, 99 were Croatian film professionals, supported by three interns and 114 extras.
Production services were handled by MP Film Production, led by producer Igor A. Nola.
The project was realised with the support of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre through its Filming in Croatia incentive programme, which continues to attract major international productions.
Speak No Evil is a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name, originally directed by Christian Tafdrup. The story follows an American family who accept an invitation from a British couple they met on holiday to spend a weekend at a remote countryside estate.
What begins as a seemingly idyllic escape gradually descends into an unsettling and disturbing psychological ordeal.
Alongside McAvoy, the film features a strong international cast including Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Scoot McNairy and others.
