Slavery Case Goes Before Courts in Croatia

WikipediaThe Zagreb Municipal State Attorney’s Office has filed charges against an unnamed 50-year-old man, who they say held a 67-year-old man as a slave for 8 years, reports daily Novi list

The 50-year-old man is accused of forcing the victim, through beatings and threats, to beg daily on the streets of the Croatian capital. The accused reportedly made more than 1 million kuna (130,000 EUR) from the victims’ begging between 2005 and September 2013. The victim, who was homeless before he was taken in by the accused, reportedly would ‘earn’ up to 100 euros some days and hand everything over to the 50-year-old man, who would in-turn by the man food, drink and cigarettes before keeping the rest for himself.
