Slaven Bilić outlines vision as he returns to lead Croatia into a new era

ZAGREB, 13 July 2026 – Newly appointed Croatia national team coach Slaven Bilić has set out his priorities and ambitions after officially beginning his second spell in charge of the Vatreni.

Speaking at his first press conference today in Zagreb since replacing Zlatko Dalić, Bilić outlined his immediate plans, discussed the future of captain Luka Modrić, explained his coaching philosophy and made clear his ambition to guide Croatia to another major tournament success.

Bilić returns to the role 14 years after leaving the national team and will lead Croatia into the next UEFA Nations League campaign before beginning qualification for UEFA Euro 2028.

Modrić decision remains with the captain

One of the main topics was whether Luka Modrić will continue playing for Croatia.

Bilić said speaking with the captain will be one of his first priorities after finalising his coaching staff. While making it clear he would like Modrić to continue, he stressed that the decision belongs entirely to the midfielder.

He described Modrić as one of world football’s great players, saying both Croatia and international football benefit from having him involved.

Bilić confirmed his backroom staff will largely consist of coaches he has previously worked with, including members of his first spell in charge and others from his club career. Although he stopped short of announcing the full team, he said supporters should expect an experienced and strong coaching group rather than any major surprises.

Bilić admitted he has accepted the role with the aim of achieving a major tournament success.

While emphasising that Croatia will take each competition step by step, he said his long-term focus is Euro 2028.

He pointed to three key strengths: the stability of the Croatian Football Federation, the quality of the current squad and the confidence created by Croatia’s achievements over the past three decades, particularly under Zlatko Dalić.

Bilić also said the UEFA Nations League remains important and should not simply be viewed as preparation for future tournaments.

Praise for Zlatko Dalić

The new coach paid tribute to predecessor Zlatko Dalić, describing his achievements as outstanding.

Bilić said he deliberately waited until his appointment became official before contacting Dalić but confirmed he intends to speak with him soon.

He added that Dalić’s success has shown future Croatia coaches that winning major honours is achievable.

Squad selection based on quality

Bilić made it clear that selection will be based primarily on quality rather than age or where players currently play.

He rejected the idea of rebuilding simply for the sake of youth, saying the national team is different from club football and should always include the country’s best available players.

Character, commitment and compatibility within the squad will also be considered, but quality will remain the main criterion. He added that players performing well in the Croatian league will receive opportunities if they prove they are good enough.

Coaching philosophy

Bilić said he wants Croatia to play positive, attacking football while maintaining discipline and teamwork.

He pointed to Croatia’s second-half performance against Portugal at the recent FIFA World Cup as an example of the intensity, confidence and aggressive mentality he wants his team to display.

At the same time, he acknowledged that different matches require different tactical approaches and stressed that the team’s balance remains essential.

Working with young players

The Croatia coach highlighted the importance of close cooperation with the Under-21 national team under Ivica Olić and Niko Kranjčar.

He said the youth setup should continue producing players capable of gradually stepping into the senior national team when ready.

A more experienced coach

Reflecting on his first spell as Croatia coach between 2006 and 2012, Bilić said the experience gained over the past 14 years has made him a stronger manager.

He described himself as being in the best stage of his coaching career, combining experience with motivation and energy.

Bilić also dismissed criticism over past political accusations, saying he no longer pays attention to such comments.

Croatian Football Federation president Marijan Kustić thanked Zlatko Dalić for his historic achievements and expressed confidence that Bilić is the right person to lead the national team into its next era.

Bilić’s second debut as Croatia coach will come on 26 September away to the Czech Republic in the UEFA Nations League, before matches against Spain and England follow in a demanding opening schedule.
