23 November 2019 – Croatia’s world champion rowing brothers, Martin and Valent Sinkovic, have been named the 2019 World Rowing Men’s Crew of the Year at a ceremony in London on Friday night.

“Thank you so much, we are really honoured and grateful. This is a real motivation for Tokyo 2020,” the brothers said after winning the award.

The Sinkovic brothers, who this year won their 6th gold medal at a World Championship, beat fellow finalists Zhiyu Liu and Liang Zhang from China (Men’s Double Sculls), Oliver Zeidler from Germany (Men’s Single Sculls), Ireland’s Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy (Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls) and Dirk Uittenbogaard, Abe Wiersma, Tone Wieten and Koen Metsmakers, from The Netherlands (Men’s Quadruple Sculls) to win the award.

After dominating the double sculls discipline and remaining unbeaten for three years, the brothers did something which is rare in the sport of rowing and announced they would change classes to compete in the coxless pairs. They became the first rowers in history to win World and European Championship gold medals in two disciplines. The brothers won the world’s best male crew award also in 2016.
