Šimunić Appeals to Sport’s Highest Court

joe simunicThe Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, have confirmed that Croatia defender Josip Šimunić has appealed his 10-match ban handed down by FIFA late last year…

CAS says the 36-year-old Dinamo Zagreb captain appealed Wednesday to have the 10-match ban he received from FIFA for chanting ‘Za Dom’ after Croatia’s World Cup playoff victory against Iceland in Zagreb last November overturned or deferred for a one-year probationary period.

“We will fast-track the case. It will definately be solved before the World Cup,” said CAS.

Šimunić’s German-based lawyer Davor Prtenjača is confident that his client will be successful and on the plane with the rest of the Croatia squad to Brazil come June. It seems that coach Niko Kovač has not given up hope either, with reports that he has been putting Šimunić through his paces and testing his fitness in the hope the ban gets overturned.

Croatia plays the opening match of the World Cup against hosts Brazil on 12 June.
