One of the most authentic Croatian island festivals returns to Dugi Otok

The picturesque island village of Sali on Dugi Otok will host the Sea and Salt Festival on Friday, 26 June, bringing together gastronomy, culture and tradition in a celebration of Dalmatian heritage.

Set against the backdrop of one of Croatia’s best-known fishing communities, the festival will highlight the long-standing connection between local people, the Adriatic Sea and salt production.

Visitors can expect an evening programme centred around authentic island experiences, with the waterfront transformed into a showcase of traditional wooden boats and sailing vessels. An exhibition of historic boats will offer a glimpse into the maritime heritage that has shaped life on Dugi Otok for generations.

A major attraction of the festival will be its gastronomic offering. Guests will have the opportunity to sample a variety of seafood dishes and traditional specialities from Sali, showcasing the flavours of the Adriatic and local culinary traditions.

This year’s event places a special focus on salt, often referred to as the region’s “white gold”. Representatives from Nin Saltworks will present their range of salt products and provide insights into the traditional process of hand-harvesting sea salt. Visitors will also learn about the characteristics and uses of fleur de sel, one of the most prized forms of sea salt.

Adding to the wellness aspect of the event, open-air salt massage sessions will be available, combining the benefits of natural sea salt with the relaxing atmosphere of the island’s waterfront.

The festival will also feature a market showcasing products from local family farms and producers. Visitors will be able to explore a range of island-made goods, including olive oils, liqueurs, handmade crafts and souvenirs.

A varied cultural and musical programme will accompany the festival throughout the evening. The Tamburitza Orchestra and Choir of HORKUD Golub from Bjelovar will perform a selection of traditional music, while entertainment later in the evening will be provided by Šibenik-based Duo Payperview.

Organisers say the event aims to celebrate the traditions, flavours and cultural identity of Dalmatia while offering visitors an authentic island experience at the start of the summer season.
