ZAGREB, 25 March (Hina) – Archaeologists have uncovered 22 Roman graves during exploratory works at the site of a future farmers’ market in the eastern Croatian city of Vinkovci, local authorities said on Tuesday.

Mayor Josip Romić said on social media that the graves are believed to date from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD.

He noted that the Roman city of Cibalae, located on the site of present-day Vinkovci, was among the roughly 100 most important and largest cities of the Roman Empire.

Given the empire’s vast extent across three continents, he added, it is no surprise that Vinkovci is today one of Europe’s key archaeological sites.

The archaeological works are part of a €3.8 million project to reconstruct and upgrade the city’s open-air market.
