Current star Šimić (24) and former World Champion Vlašić (30) battled it out in the rain, with the younger Šimić coming out trumps and winning the event. Šimić, who won bronze at the recent European Championships in Zurich, jumped 193 centimetres. Vlašić had to settle for second place, whilst Poland’s Kamila Lićwinko came third.

“I am happy with the victory, although I hope to jump higher. Unfortunately it was raining and cold and was difficult to expect a better result. I am certain the result would have been better if it had not been raining,” Šimić said after the win.

Meanwhile, Sandra Perković expectedly won the women’s discus event. The European and World Champion, who dominates the sport, threw 65.09 metres to claim first.
