The northern Adriatic city of Rijeka, which is the current European Capital of Culture, has been voted among the top 10 destinations in the European Best Destination for 2020 competition.

From 15 January – 5 February 2020, travellers from all over the world voted for their favourite destination from 20 finalists vying for this year’s title.

Destinations vying for the title included Paris, Rome, Berlin, Prague, Madrid, Vienna, Reykjavik, Rotterdam, Cork, Colmar, Rochefort, Athena, Sibiu, Namur, Menorca, Heviz, Cascais, Tbilisi and Bydgoszcz.

After all votes were counted, Rijeka finished in 8th place.

“This excellent high ranking of Rijeka is the result of year-round continuous work of the whole destination and proof of Rijeka’s improved positioning on the world tourist map, which is supported by the fact that 77% of votes were from abroad and 23% of the votes came from Croatia,” the Croatian Tourist Board said, before adding.

“Numerous events throughout the year have made Rijeka one of Europe’s best city break destinations, and this is a great result.”
