The pre-season tourism period in Croatia is in full swing, with Rijeka emerging as one of the country’s top-performing destinations.

The coastal city continues to attract increasing numbers of visitors each year, particularly younger travellers, while both arrivals and overnight stays are on the rise.

Tourist activity is already visible across the city’s streets, even outside the peak summer months. Visitors from neighbouring countries dominate, although Rijeka is also drawing guests from further afield.

Among them are groups attending cultural events, including theatre festivals and international choir performances.

First-time visitors highlight the city’s architecture, coastal setting and cultural atmosphere as key attractions. Cultural landmarks such as museums and Trsat Castle remain among the most visited sites, offering panoramic views over the city and the Kvarner Bay.

Visitors have praised Rijeka’s unique combination of sea, mountains and historical heritage, describing it as a destination that appeals to a wide range of interests.

Double-digit growth in arrivals and overnight stays

Positive trends are also being recorded across the tourism sector. Hospitality providers report a steady increase in overnight stays, reflecting broader growth across the city.

According to local tourism officials, Rijeka has seen a 23% increase in arrivals and a 10% rise in overnight stays compared to the same period last year, HRT reported.

The majority of visitors fall within the 19–30 age group, followed by those up to 40, reinforcing Rijeka’s position as an attractive urban city break destination.

Events and gastronomy boosting appeal

A strong calendar of events is contributing to the city’s growing appeal. Cultural and entertainment programmes continue to draw visitors during the pre-season, while gastronomy is playing an increasingly important role.

The wider Kvarner region’s designation as a European Region of Gastronomy this year is expected to further boost interest, encouraging additional arrivals in the months ahead.

Despite ongoing global uncertainties, tourism stakeholders remain optimistic. Current trends suggest that Rijeka is on track for a successful year, with pre-season performance providing a solid foundation for the main summer period.

With rising demand, a younger visitor profile and a diverse offer combining culture, events and gastronomy, Rijeka is strengthening its reputation as one of Croatia’s leading urban travel destinations.
